What is CIF in the Apparel Industry?

Posted on August 31, 2024July 16, 2026 By Admin No Comments on What is CIF in the Apparel Industry?

In apparel export business, CIF is a contract used between the buyer and the apparel seller. CIF stands for Cost, Insurance and Freight.

In a CIF arrangement, the supplier (garment manufacturer) is responsible for all costs and risks until the goods reach the designated port or destination. The buyer takes ownership and responsibility once the goods arrive at the destination.

CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) is a trade term used in international shipping and export business. With CIF agreement the seller uses a forwarder of their choice. If a apparel manufacturer from India is shipping the finished goods to a buyer in USA, the price quote will include:

1. Supplier to pay the cost of goods (manufacturing cost)

2. Provide insurance coverage for the goods during transit

3. Pay the freight charges to transport the goods to the specified destination

CIF is commonly used in international trade, particularly for ocean freight shipments. It’s important to note that CIF only applies to the main carriage (ocean or air) and not to inland transportation or other additional costs. Under CIF contact the garment manufacturer is no longer responsible for goods when the ship/aircraft arrives at the country of final destination.

Incoterms, such as CIF, help clarify responsibilities and costs for buyers and sellers in international trade, making transactions smoother and less prone to misunderstandings.
